SHOCKWAVE THERAPY

A non-invasive, FDA-cleared treatment for chronic pain that has not responded to traditional therapy.

When Pain Keeps Coming Back, There Is Another Option

If you have been dealing with chronic pain for months or even years, and other treatments have not given you lasting relief, shockwave therapy may be the next step worth exploring. At Adept Physical Therapy, we use Extracorporeal Pulse Activation Technology (EPAT), one of the most advanced non-invasive treatment methods available, cleared by the FDA and backed by extensive clinical research.

EPAT works by delivering acoustic pressure waves to the affected area, stimulating blood circulation, encouraging tissue regeneration, and activating the body's natural healing process. Rather than masking pain, it addresses the underlying issue at the source.

What Are the Benefits of Shockwave Therapy?

Shockwave therapy offers several advantages over more invasive treatment options: No surgery, no anesthesia, no scarring

No risk of infection

No significant downtime

Sessions take only 20 to 30 minutes

Over 80% of patients report meaningful pain reduction

Can be performed right here in our clinic

Patients can walk immediately after treatment and typically return to normal activities within 24 to 48 hours

WHAT CAN SHOCKWAVE THERAPY TREAT?

Shockwave therapy is effective for a wide range of acute and chronic musculoskeletal conditions, particularly those involving tendons, soft tissue, and areas with poor circulation or slow healing. Conditions we commonly treat include:

Plantar fasciitis and foot pain

Achilles tendonitis

Shoulder pain and rotator cuff injuries

Tennis elbow and other overuse injuries

Neck and back pain

Hip and gluteal pain

Myofascial trigger points

General tendon and soft tissue pain throughout the body

If you are not sure whether your condition is a good fit, give us a call and we will help you figure it out.

What to Expect During Treatment

Before beginning treatment, your therapist will evaluate whether shockwave therapy is appropriate for your specific condition and health history. If it is a good fit, here is what the process looks like:

A coupling gel is applied to the treatment area to help conduct the pressure waves effectively. Your therapist then uses a handheld applicator to deliver the waves to the targeted area. Most sessions take between 5 and 10 minutes. Some patients experience mild discomfort during treatment, and it is not uncommon to feel some residual soreness in the days that follow, similar to how you might feel after a workout.

Most patients require at least three weekly sessions to see results, though this can vary depending on the condition being treated. Some patients notice improvement right away, while for others it may take up to four weeks for the full effects to become apparent. Results continue to develop over time as the body continues to heal.

IS SHOCKWAVE THERAPY SAFE?

Yes. EPAT technology was originally developed in Europe and is used widely around the world. It has been cleared by the FDA and has an extensive track record of safety and effectiveness. The treatment carries virtually no risk of serious side effects and has a proven success rate that is comparable to surgery for many conditions, without the risks or recovery time that surgery involves.

There are some health conditions for which shockwave therapy may not be appropriate, including active malignancies and deep vein thrombosis (DVT). Your therapist will review your health history with you before recommending this treatment.
