DRY NEEDLING
A targeted, effective technique for relieving muscle pain, releasing tension, and restoring movement.
What is Dry Needling?
Dry needling is a treatment technique used by trained physical therapists to address pain and movement restrictions associated with muscle tension and trigger points. A trigger point is a tight, sensitive area within a muscle that can cause pain, limit your range of motion, and sometimes refer discomfort to other parts of the body.
During treatment, your therapist inserts a very thin, solid needle directly into or near the trigger point. The needle itself contains no medication or injections, which is where the term "dry" comes from. The insertion stimulates the muscle, encouraging it to release tension and prompting the body's natural healing response. Many patients notice a significant reduction in pain and an improvement in mobility after just a few sessions.
At Adept Physical Therapy, dry needling is performed exclusively by our certified practitioners and is typically used as part of a broader, personalized treatment plan rather than as a standalone procedure.
Is Dry Needling the Same as Acupuncture?
This is one of the most common questions we get, and the short answer is no. While both practices use thin needles, they are based on very different principles. Acupuncture is rooted in traditional Chinese medicine and focuses on balancing energy flow throughout the body. Dry needling is grounded in Western medicine and anatomy, with a specific focus on treating the muscular and neuromuscular system to reduce pain and improve physical function.
CONDITIONS DRY NEEDLING CAN HELP
Dry needling can be an effective part of treatment for a wide range of musculoskeletal conditions, including:
Neck and back pain
Shoulder pain and rotator cuff injuries
Headaches and migraines
Tennis elbow and other overuse injuries
Hip and gluteal pain
Knee pain
Achilles tendonitis
Plantar fasciitis
Muscle strains and tightness
Sciatica
Temporomandibular (jaw) pain
If you are dealing with chronic pain or muscle tightness that has not responded well to other treatments, dry needling may be worth discussing with your therapist.
What to Expect During Treatment
Before your first dry needling session, your therapist will take the time to explain the technique, answer any questions you have, and make sure it is a good fit for your specific situation.
During treatment, most patients experience minimal discomfort. You may feel a brief muscle twitch or a mild aching sensation when the needle reaches a trigger point, which is a normal and often positive sign that the treatment is working. Some soreness in the area is common in the day or two following a session, similar to what you might feel after a thorough workout.
The needles used in dry needling are much thinner than those used for injections or blood draws, so many patients who are apprehensive going in are pleasantly surprised by how manageable the experience is.
A NOTE ON INSURANCE COVERAGE: Coverage for dry needling varies by insurance plan. We recommend contacting your insurance provider in advance to ask about your specific benefits. Our team is happy to help answer any questions you have about the process.
CURIOUS WHETHER DRY NEEDLING IS RIGHT FOR YOU?
The best way to find out is to have a conversation with one of our therapists. We will take the time to understand what you are dealing with and help you decide whether dry needling makes sense as part of your care plan.
